The Historical Institute is located in the middle of the lively Länggass quarter, in a building that is itself a testimony to the past. It is the former Tobler chocolate factory, which became Unitobler in 1993. With its ten professorships and seven lectureships, its numerous doctoral students, postdocs and research assistants, it is one of the larger institutes of history in Switzerland. The Institute educates over 1,000 history students and regularly strives to bring university research to a wider public.
The Institute of History is an organisational unit of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Bern and, together with the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, forms the Department of History and Archaeology. Our range of courses includes study programmes in the two-tier Bachelor-Master system, as well as a broadly diversified doctoral training programme.
