At the Institute of History, research is broadly oriented both thematically and chronologically, as well as geographically. Our staff have excellent international networks and are among the leading researchers in their respective fields. They publish in high-ranking journals and by renowned publishing houses.
By analysing a variety of sources - from medieval charters, visual and audio sources to «oral history» - our staff promote new insights in historical scholarship. From a methodological point of view, they pursue different approaches. In this way, the Institute of History at the University of Bern contributes to a better understanding of the past in all its complexity. At the same time, we strive to communicate current research findings to public in an understandable way.
