Departments

The institute currently has ten professorships, which together offer a wide range of courses. In teaching and research, all eras are covered, from Greek-Roman antiquity through medieval history to early modern times and modern history. Swiss history before and after 1800 is represented by two independent chairs, as are Iberian and Latin American history and Economic, Social and Environmental history, the latter - in collaboration with the University's Oeschger Center - has a special focus on climate history. The history of transnational interdependencies is also one of the institute's focal points.
The Institute of History consists of the following seven departments:
Ancient History and the Classical Tradition
Medieval History
Early Modern History
Modern and Contemporary History
Swiss History
Economic, Social and Environmental History
Iberian and Latin American History
